The registration desk will also have our team available throughout the conference. Eliza Reid grew up just outside Ottawa (the daughter of a teacher) and met her Icelandic husband in graduate school in England. When she gave fate a push by contriving to win a date with him in a raffle, she never imagined that spontaneous decision would lead her to becoming First Lady of Iceland almost two decades later, after a whirlwind seven-week campaign on her husband’s first foray into public office.
Using Eliza’s experiences of navigating her public but unspecified role to upend expectations about first ladies and to use her platform to advocate for greater gender equality and other important issues, this keynote is about inspiring people to make the most of unexpected opportunities in order to be forces for positive change in the world. It’s for everyone who strives to write their own fairytale, and who wants to counteract identities and expectations others might impose on us.

This session will present the findings of a study aimed at better understanding the impact of focused leadership education on personal and collective wellness and mindfulness for teachers and leaders in K-12 schools. By engaging in interviews with twenty-four teachers and leaders undertaking such leadership education and through the co-creation of an edited book of their experiences as teachers and leaders committed to wellbeing, the importance of these topics to leadership became critical. Four themes stood as the findings and have been structured around the work of Arrien (1993). These include the importance of vertical leadership growth, the criticality of voice in pedagogical leadership, the role of mindfulness in teacher and leader health and wellbeing, and the need for a resurgence in storytelling as a medium for leadership. Participants in this session will be encouraged to consider what new possibilities could be explored around leadership education in today's complex educational contexts.

Increasingly teachers are facing employment discipline resulting from their use of school computers, laptops, internet connections and cellphones. Also, teachers' posting on their own computers on such social networking sites as Facebook, Twitter or blogs are increasingly facing employer disciplinary action. At our school, we targeted lifting the writing of our middle years students as writing proficiency is central to student success during the school years as it has a direct and influential impact on academic success (Creely, 2020; Graham, 2019). Barger et al. (2019) claim that engaging parents in learning with their children at school and at home is advantageous, especially if the opportunities are specific, targeted, and personalised. We drew upon this research and inspired by my own work as the Reading Australia Fellow, I offered an opportunity to parents to come to school and engage with a Parents as Writers program. The Parent Writing group meets twice a term before school and is focused on immersing the parents in the writing process, providing them with ways to improve their own writing and the writing of their children. Delegates will have access to the resources that I created and an overview of the model that was used.

Educational Leadership at the Intersections of Gender is a bilingual project funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and co-led by academics (UofA) and the ATA. This research project investigated the effect of factors such as leaves and care taking roles and the impact of gender and intersectionalities on the career progression of women educators. Our data confirmed what we have long suspected, the progression of women through the teaching profession is significantly different than men and reinforced the importance of bringing women to the policymaking process. As the late justice Ruth Baden Ginsburg said, "Women belong in all places where decisions are being made. It shouldn't be that women are the exception." With that in mind, our workshop will be dedicated to both presenting our research findings and to hosting a collaborative dialogue around policy-oriented questions. The Alberta based research is the first step to what we hope becomes a nation wide project, which will improve the live experiences of women as they move through the teaching profession.

The toolkit includes three bodies of knowledge that can easily be integrated into one's leadership language: 1) Catholic Social Teachings; The Parables and Divine Words of Christ; and 3) Walking with the Saints. They allow for reflection on leadership at a school and system level. Open the door and get out of your comfort zone, engage in critical conversations, and experience first-hand how your peers engage with best practices and pedagogical leadership in their contexts around the globe. Take home fresh perspectives and put them to use in your own school and system. We will detail our short-term in-person exchanges, where you are hosted by your exchange partner for approximately ten days to observe their school and system, typically over your spring break. You then reciprocate by hosting your exchange partner. We also offer exciting virtual exchange opportunities, no travel required. Destinations for short-term exchanges include Australia, Spain, Germany, Mexico, Alberta Accredited International Schools, and Iceland. No language requirements to participate.

In fact, this relational approach to school leadership can be extremely rewarding or extremely challenging depending on the context of the school at any given time! Effective school leaders know the emotional labour that goes into caring for others is a critical component of building a thriving school environment. This presentation will explore what our research team, from the University of Calgary, the University of Ottawa and the Alberta Teachers Association learned when school leaders of all genders were asked about their experiences with emotional labour. This presentation will probe the question of whether emotional labour is different depending on gender. It will also consider the impact and mental cost of providing emotional labour on a regular basis. Finally, this session will explore methods that can be used to help school leaders care for their own mental emotional well-being.

The number one LQS, SLQS and TQS is Fostering and building Effective Relationships. Yes, but how? Is it hard to foster effective relationships sometimes? Why? In this session, Leaders of learning will unpack practical and immediate applicable skills and strategies that will positively impact our relationships, and instantly create rapport with our colleagues. It is important to remember that people have different behaviour styles, but within these differences, we all have strengths. Therefore, we need to capitalize on these strengths, and adjust our message to increase our daily effectiveness. In this session, based on the platinum rule (treat people the way they want to be treated), leaders of learning with explore how to create a quicker, deeper, and longer lasting rapport with others.
